Introduction to Petroleum Accounting

This seminar has been specifically designed to provide an introduction to the Petroleum and Natural Gas Industry and a review of the basic accounting principles and procedures in regular use by the industry. Instructors:

Mark Lane

Mark Lane began working in the earth sciences in 1980 and has a gained a wide variety of related experience.  His employers have included large international oil and gas companies, small and mid-sized seismic service companies, universities, and technical institutes.  His career has ranged through oil and gas exploration, geophysical research, computer programming, and employee development.  For the past eight years Mr. Lane has been teaching geophysics and geology to both specialists and non-specialists.  He is currently providing training services through his company Mentromorphic Consulting Ltd.

Lorie Linberg

Lorie has been working in the oilpatch for 34 years and has been consulting for the past 18 years.  She consults in oil and gas production accounting related work for several companies in Calgary.  Lorie has been teaching for the past 24 years for CAPPA, PASC, and various other organizations.

Richard Mackelvie – CMA, B. Commerce (Honours)

In June 2008, Richard joined Canadian Natural as a Joint Venture Auditor.  Richard's qualifications include: Professional accounting designation qualification - Certified Management Accountant (CMA) (1989) and Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of Ottawa, School of Business (1983).  In addition Richard has over 30 years of audit and accounting experience with senior and mid-size oil and gas upstream companies (mostly JV and vendor audits).

Monique Tenn

Monique Tenn has been working in the oil and gas industry for over 25 years.  Although she started her career at Dome Petroleum Limited, she has worked in the junior sector for the last 15 years.  She is a consulting controller providing financial reporting services to both public and private companies, and survived the process of transitioning to IFRS.  She is currently controller at Westbrick Energy Ltd, a privately-held company.

Brandt Tracey, P. Eng

Brandt is a drilling engineer with Devon Energy and has experience in a variety of different well types across Alberta and Saskatchewan.  His experience includes thermal delineation, SAGD horizontal well pairs, slant wells for cold flow heavy oil, conventional horizontal wells, directional wells, and extended reach horizontal wells.  Brandt graduated from the University of Calgary in 2006 with a Bachelors of Science in Oil & Gas Engineering.  His 9 years of industry experience also include open hole wireline logging and reserve evaluation.

Tracy Kozak

Tracy Kozak has been in the oil and gas industry for 17 years.  She has worked at Baytex Energy Ltd. for 14 of those years.  During her time in the industry she has had various roles within the accounting department.  She has experience in Accounts payable, Non-Operated Joint Venture, Operated Joint Venture, Audits, Payouts and most recently the Capital accounting department.

PASC June Luncheon: RESCHEDULED TO AGM on OCTOBER 22

Wednesday, June 18th at the Calgary Petroleum Club - a presentation by Cameron Gingrich and Dr. Lev Virine, Ziff Energy as they present on "Full Cycle Cost of Oil & Gas".

Cameron Gingrich, B.Sc., B.A. – Director, Gas Services, has a decade of natural gas experience.  Responsible for analytical support and in-depth customized data analysis, trending, and modeling.  Focuses effort toward the North American Gas Strategies Retainer Service, multi-client studies, and custom consulting projects include: analysis of pipeline tolls, gas supply/storage load duration modeling, gas demand outlooks, and gas price modeling.  Mr. Gingrich was the lead analyst on the Northern Gas and Evolution of Dawn Multi-client studies, and authored papers on: Summer Gas Storage Analysis, Canadian Gas Exports to 2025, Natural Gas Price Forecast to 2045, and LNG Outlook to 2035.  In addition to the Canadian Securities Course, Mr. Gingrich has two degrees: a Bachelor of Science from the University of Alberta and a Bachelor in Arts in Economics from the University of Calgary where his studies focused on strategic energy and financial markets.  

Dr. Lev Virine, P.Eng., Ph.D. – Manager, Gas Consulting, has over 2 decades of technical experience, economic evaluation of oil and gas reserves, decision and risk analysis, portfolio management, and oil and gas reserves management.  He assisted leading national and international exploration and production companies in establishing reserves evaluation and decision analysis processes.  Dr. Virine is the author of more than 40 scientific papers and articles, 7 patents, and two books.  His current focus is gas production outlooks, gas supply decline analysis, and full cycle cost assessment.  He has spoken at conferences and symposiums around the world.  Dr. Virine received his doctoral degree in engineering and computer science from Moscow State University of Railway Engineering. 

Presentation Summary: The costs for the Energy Industry to find, develop, produce, and manage oil and gas production has 3 key components:

1. Technology enhancements improve industry performance

2. Finding & Development costs can shrink with more reserves identified for each well (multi-lateral horizontal wells completed with dozens of hydraulic fractures)

3. Operating costs can be driven down through ruthless efficiency gains extracted by applying best practices, benchmarking, and determined focus on the bottom line

   By combining the cost components, full cycle costs can be compared between Western Canada and other basins throughout North America. The industry will systematically develop lower cost basins first. Natural Gas Liquids can provide an important price uplift for gas producers, thus producers may select liquid prone regions first.
